Christmas in Ushuaia 25 Dec 2017

I woke up late, 9.30, showered and had coffee while chatting at the kitchen table. One couple have cycled from Toronto to here, only to have their flight cancelled last week due to strikes. We just missed that thankfully.  They got a refund and were enjoying Christmas in Ushuaia. Lots of respect for them achieving that.

There are loads is healthy looking stray dogs all over Ushuaia. This morning one was lying at our door.

We drove to the train at the end of the world. Because of being a little short of time we decided not to take the trip, but rather drive to Tierra del Fuego, the beautiful national park. We walked to a small waterfall.

There were some weird looking mushrooms on the ground and in the trees.

We saw a flock of parrots and some horses (but never saw a fox).

They introduced beavers to the park in 1946 and then were unhappy that they were wrecking havoc with the rivers by building dams which diverted water. It's apparently been an environmental disaster. There is a walk named after then where you can see their work.

Saw lovely bird of pray, happily beginning from the tourists.

And another who I gave some cheese to.

At the end of the park, there was the yacht we'd communicated with and considered going to Antarctica on, which we happened to then see returning to port while we were having dinner.

Feeling quite tired, we wanted to still drive the north road, which has beautiful forrests. We drove as far as the big dam before turning back for Ushuaia.

We had dinner at the "gallery" restaurant recommended by our hostel, Viejo Lobo, meaning "Old wolf (of the sea)", named after the father of the three men who own the restaurant. Because he had a white beard he was called this, which encouraged him to take up sailing, which he passed on to his sons who now have sailing yachts in the Caribbean.
