Off to Antarctica 27 Dec 2017 First night on the boat...slept well. Had breakfast and now doing last minute shopping before we sail away at 14h00 hours today. The yacht club We were supposed to leave at two, but after getting the formalities done at the military building we ask went for lunch at a local restaurant. Again obscene amounts of meat which I took all the leftovers for the street dogs. Have it to one staying at the yacht club. Peter, pur skipper is the man on the left, being the litre of beer we ordered with lunch! Beer, like everything here is so expensive. A normal size beer is about R100 I a restaurant! We should sail in a few hours. Peter has 40 years experience and 10 in the Antarctic and we've inky beard praise for him. Reassuring. Beautiful dog outside the bank We are checking the sails now Huge loaves of crispy bread 2 trunks of chocolates and biscuits! I got the enjoyable task of packing them! Roy and my bedroom. ...

Port in Ushuaia...first night on boat 26 Dec 2017 This morning we took all our belongings to the boat where our skipper Peter checked our clothing and advised what we needed to borrow and buy further. Olga showed us around the yacht. View from the pilot house, although except for extreme conditions the wheel on deck is used. We are having a quick lunch break..The last one on land for a while. Peter is buying supplies which will be delivered to the yacht at 7 this evening. Back at the boat we helped pack all the food and wow, there is a lot. I packed the chocolates and biscuits...enough to last 3 months, even with me on board. Dinner was with all the crew, past and present at a Chinese restaurant.

Christmas in Ushuaia 25 Dec 2017 I woke up late, 9.30, showered and had coffee while chatting at the kitchen table. One couple have cycled from Toronto to here, only to have their flight cancelled last week due to strikes. We just missed that thankfully.  They got a refund and were enjoying Christmas in Ushuaia. Lots of respect for them achieving that. There are loads is healthy looking stray dogs all over Ushuaia. This morning one was lying at our door. We drove to the train at the end of the world. Because of being a little short of time we decided not to take the trip, but rather drive to Tierra del Fuego, the beautiful national park. We walked to a small waterfall. There were some weird looking mushrooms on the ground and in the trees. We saw a flock of parrots and some horses (but never saw a fox). They introduced beavers to the park in 1946 and then were unhappy that they were wrecking havoc with the rivers by building dams which diverted water. It...

Ushuaia 24 Dec 2017 Had coffee at the back packers while our host gave us information on what to do and where to go. Her first advice was to hire a car. We walked down to information and got a map and car hire prices. They were really organized. We chose Tiger cars as they were cheapest and close. All their cheaper cars were taken so we took the pricier one and went to La Anonima for groceries before the shops closed for Xmas eave. Cheese, rolls, olives and chips (really expensive!), no pesto available, hair conditioner (I brought 2 shampoos by mistake), red wine and champagne. All set, we went to look for our yacht, Selma, and were relieved to find out she'd arrived an hour or two ago, no crew around though.  Is she red or orange? Rushing before the shops closed we unsuccessfully looked for mits to go over our gloves (oops) but managed to get Roy some goggles. Now to the glacier. It was a long walk up but pretty. Wet didn't make it all the way, but had ...

Sao Paulo, Beunes Aires to Ushuaia  23 Dec 2017 Had to smile..on the CT to Sao Paulo flight, about half way through, Roy decided he felt like a glass of red wine so he walked to the back and asked the steward who replied with..."How many glasses have you had?"  :) It's been a long flight. 10 hours to Sau Paulo airport, which like Beunes Aires felt quite old and run down. The walk between the fights was really long as we had to collect our luggage as the next leg was with Aerolineas airline and not TAM.  My advice is to give yourself long  stop overs between flights in South America. We had a few stressful moments. Considering one of the main reasons for Roy doing this trip is so that he can take photos, he had rather a heavy amount of delicate equipment. We bought extra luggage for all the flights, but icky only AFTER booking the flights within South America did it show that you couldn't but the extra bag on these at all. Roy's hand luggage came in at 23k...
